Five hundred dollars doesn't stretch far on a new laptop in 2026. At that price, new machines usually come with an entry-level processor, a plastic build and a modest amount of memory and storage. Spend the same money on a refurbished business laptop and you can get a Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook or Lenovo ThinkPad that originally cost well over $1,500 — with a proper Intel Core i5 or i7, an SSD and a build designed for years of daily office use.
This guide explains what you can realistically get for under $500 in Australia, which models to shortlist, and the mistakes to avoid.
The short answer
For most people, the best laptop under $500 is a refurbished business laptop with:
- An Intel Core i5 or i7, 8th generation or newer — so it runs Windows 11
- 8GB of RAM or more (16GB if you keep lots of tabs and apps open)
- A 256GB SSD or larger
- A real warranty from a seller you can actually contact
Tick those four boxes and you'll have a laptop that feels quick for study, work, browsing and streaming. Browse our current range of refurbished laptops under $500.
Why refurbished wins at this budget
Business laptops are built differently from budget consumer models. They're designed for corporate fleets, so they get tougher chassis, better keyboards, more ports and parts that are easy to service. Companies typically replace them after a lease of a few years, which is when they're tested, cleaned, graded and resold.
That means under $500 you're choosing between a brand-new entry-level laptop and a few-years-old premium one. For everyday use, the premium one is usually the faster, nicer and longer-lasting machine.
The spec that matters most in 2026: Windows 11
Windows 10 has reached end of support, so your next laptop should run Windows 11. Microsoft's official requirement is an Intel 8th generation processor or newer. You can check the generation from the model number: an i5-8350U is 8th gen, an i5-10210U is 10th gen, an i5-1135G7 is 11th gen and an i5-1235U is 12th gen.
Older 6th and 7th generation laptops can still be fine as a second device or for light offline use, but for your main laptop we recommend 8th gen or newer.
What to shortlist under $500
Stock changes daily, but these are the models we see most often under $500 — grouped by processor generation, from the lower end of the budget to the top.
8th generation: the value sweet spot
Laptops such as the Dell Latitude 5490, 7490 and 5300, HP EliteBook 830 G5 and 840 G5, HP ProBook 430 G6 and Lenovo ThinkPad T490s and X390 sit at the lower end of the budget. With an 8th gen i5, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD they run Windows 11 and handle schoolwork, emails, video calls and streaming comfortably. 10th generation: a step up in speed
The Dell Latitude 5310 and 5410, HP EliteBook 840 G7 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 and T14 Gen 1 add a newer processor for smoother multitasking. Many come with 16GB of RAM in this price range, which is worth having if you work with large spreadsheets or lots of browser tabs.
11th and 12th generation: the top of the budget
Towards $500 you'll find the Dell Latitude 5420, 7420 and 5430, HP ProBook 430 G8 and EliteBook 840 G8 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9. These are only a few years old, with noticeably better graphics and battery efficiency than older generations. If you want a laptop that will feel current for as long as possible, this is the group to aim for.
Want a touchscreen or 2-in-1?
Convertible laptops that fold into a tablet are surprisingly affordable refurbished. Look at the Dell Latitude 5310 2-in-1, HP EliteBook x360 1030 and Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga and X1 Yoga. Browse all 2-in-1 laptops.
Prefer a Mac?
Refurbished MacBooks under $500 do appear, but they tend to be older models. Older Macs stop receiving the newest macOS versions sooner than a comparable Windows laptop stops receiving Windows 11 updates, so check which macOS version a model supports before buying. See our refurbished MacBooks.
What to avoid
- 4GB of RAM. Windows 11 and a modern web browser will feel sluggish. 8GB is the sensible minimum.
- A hard drive (HDD) instead of an SSD. An SSD is the single biggest factor in how fast a laptop feels.
- 128GB of storage if you keep files locally. It's fine if you save everything to the cloud, but 256GB gives you breathing room.
- No warranty. A cheap laptop from a private seller can cost more in the end. Every laptop we sell comes with a 12-month warranty and 30-day free returns.
Which condition grade should you choose?
The grade describes cosmetic wear only — every laptop is fully tested regardless of grade. Good condition is the cheapest way into a given model and may show minor signs of use. Very Good laptops have light, hard-to-notice marks. Excellent laptops show little to no wear. If the laptop is going in a school bag, Good condition is often the smart buy. Frequently asked questions
Is $500 enough for a good laptop in Australia?
Yes, if you buy refurbished. Under $500 you can get a business-grade laptop with an Intel Core i5 or i7, 8–16GB of RAM and an SSD, which is plenty for study, office work, browsing and streaming.
What's the best laptop under $500 for school or uni?
A lightweight 13 or 14-inch business laptop with an 8th gen or newer i5, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD — for example a Dell Latitude 5300 or 5410, HP ProBook 430 or Lenovo ThinkPad T490s. If your school publishes BYOD (bring your own device) requirements, check them first; most are easily met by these specs.
